Terahertz beam steering in application to free-space sensing

September 9, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Free-space transmission of terahertz waves opens great opportunities for wireless communication and sensing. Nevertheless, terahertz transmission suffers from severe diffraction losses due to the shorter wavelengths than the microwaves. To compensate for the diffraction losses, forming and steering directional beams is indispensable. However, terahertz beam steering is still challenging due to the lack of practical phase shifters. In this talk, we introduce novel strategies of terahertz beam steering using an integrated platform based on dispersion engineering, that can circumvent the lack of terahertz phase shifters. Based on this concept, we show a demonstration of integrated terahertz radar that serves as a “non-contact stethoscope” capable of detecting human heartbeat through the clothes.
