2023 AESS Virtual Distinguished Lecturer Series: Luke Rosenberg – 3D ISAR: Techniques and Applications

August 1, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

In maritime radar, Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) is used to image targets with classification typically performed by a radar operator. Three dimensional (3D)-ISAR was developed as an alternative representation with the target represented by a 3D point cloud, instead of the traditional range/Doppler image. This provides extra spatial information that can be exploited for automatic target recognition. There are three algorithms that can have been developed depending on the receiving system’s configuration: a temporal-based approach that uses a single receiver, a dual-baseline interferometric-ISAR (InISAR) with 3 receivers and a hybrid temporal-InISAR approach that uses 2 receivers along a single (horizontal) baseline that is suitable for airborne maritime surveillance platforms. To attain robust 3D-ISAR based target classification, our research has explored techniques for improving the quality of point cloud imaging using polarimetric-ISAR, array ISAR and sea clutter suppression. This talk will describe each of these enhancements and demonstrate how the improved localisation can be used to enhance target classification.
