Workshop: Chatbot Tutors for Blended Learning: Why bother? And where to start?
Abstract: Creating a pedagogical agent requires complex computer programming skills and it is usually built from scratch to fit the intended educational purpose. This makes it difficult for teachers to adapt existing systems or to attempt in creating a similar version. Recently, we have leveraged the IBM Watson Assistant chatbot engine to develop some chatbots. These chatbots have been adopted in a common core (general education) course for inquiry-based learning, with a promising outcome. In this workshop, we would like to share our experience gained from developing a set of chatbots for an online blended learning environment. Through the workshop, attendees will identify what and how chatbots can be designed for their own blended or fully online courses. They will also develop a simple chatbot system.

- 25 May Joint Institution Lecture Series:
Rollingstock In-Cab Signalling Human Factors & the Major Learnings from Other Projects
Drawing primarily on the experience of working on Sydney Trains evaluation and
subsequent adoption of the European Train Control System (ETCS), the importance of
Human Factors (HF) integration on in-cab signalling projects will be discussed. Outlining
the approach taken to consider how to adapt a proven off the shelf system, Todd will
highlight the many HF issues that need to be considered. Touching on issues such as how
HF considerations may impact the design and implementation strategy of in-cab signalling
projects, the presentation will discuss typical HF issues and impact areas, suggested
approaches, and key lessons learnt – both from a technical HF integration perspective as
well as the overall approach to HF in the project lifecycle.

2 March 2017 Visit to Huawei Datacentre
Dear IEEE members
Join us and RSVP here for this space-limited tour at Australia’s Huawei Datacentre.
Note that this invitation will first be sent to PH/CAS/SSC/ED members, and then to NSW members.
- Date: 2 March 2017
- Time: 6:00 pm
- Venue: Huawei Technologies Australia, Level 11, Tower B, 799 Pacific Highway, Chatswood, NSW 2067.
Abstract: The Data Centre is both ubiquitous and strategically important. They have become part of a modern city’s infrastructure, and while they seem to simply provide cloud storage, they are actually becoming increasingly sophisticated in different engineering areas such as power management, data security, and environmental control.
Asia will see stronger growth in demand for data storage than the more developed US and European markets with growing internet penetration and internet traffic will drive stronger demand for datacentres in Asia.
Huawei Technologies Australia hosts a datacentre in Chatswood. This event is specially organised for a limited number of our IEEE chapter and NSW state members to catch a glimpse of their facilities and learn more about their capability in this space.
RSVP: Please follow this link to register (first come first serve).
