According to one of the leading networking and telecommunication companies, the proliferation of smart (Internet of Things – IoT) devices is expected to reach 4 Billion in 2024 spanning its applications from healthcare to agriculture including education, transportation system, industry, and so on. It brings along with it, the connectivity and coverage challenges that should be dealt with in an efficient way for the proper functioning of the IoT network. Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), a Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) networking technology, is gaining much attention in the market nowadays due to its distinguishing features. The greatest advantage of NB-IoT is its enhanced coverage which uses the existing Long Term Evolution (LTE) architecture for its functioning. NB-IoT has attracted significant interest from the research community as its distinguishing features support various IoT use cases with stringent specifications such as connectivity, energy efficiency, reachability, reliability, and latency. Considering the growing interest in NB-IoT, this talk highlights the NB-IoT covering its architecture, use cases, advantages and disadvantages. The talk ends with the research road ahead in NB IoT. The talk is an eye-opener for beginners towards NB-IoT.
