IEEE Power Energy Society (PES) VIC Chapter Technical Seminar: Cyber Security for Smart Energy Systems

December 2, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm AEDT

Free
Event Category:

Speaker: Tim Daly, AEMO

Tim Daly will present a talk on threats and challenges facing the energy sector including some case studies and AEMO’s approach to building cyber resilience. The talk will focus on finding better ways to embed security capabilities into the energy sector. This means thinking holistically about security and converging the people, physical, and technology security aspects into organisational practices and habits. The speaker will discuss some initiatives to uplift the cybersecurity capability and maturity of the Australian energy sector.

Speaker: Professor Robin Doss, Deakin University

Smart grid infrastructure offers energy resilience and an increased level of system optimisation through improved visibility and control than possible with the traditional grid. However, as the number of system components of the smart grid increases, there is an increased reliance on distributed, active control of the network, resulting in both an increase of the attack surface and the diversity of potential attack vectors. Further, the heterogeneity of assets that make up a smart grid, present significant challenges for securing these infrastructures, requiring a rethink of traditional security practices. While the importance of secure system architecture, functional segmentation, separation of the control and data planes, and system hardening overall cannot be overstated, secure inter-device communication still remains an area of concern.  As the level of the device to device interconnectivity in these infrastructures moves increasingly towards massive interconnectivity, secure and efficient methods for establishing secure channels for inter-device communication, with support for a range of communication patterns and quality of service (QoS) requirements becomes imperative.
