Leveraging transferable skills – pivoting from a PhD into a non-academic career

May 18, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

A PhD research programme has as a fundamental objective to develop advanced research skills and knowledge in a chosen field that will allow the candidate to become an internationally recognized independent researcher. That said, it is important to acknowledge that the majority of PhD graduates will pursue their careers outside an academic environment and potentially outside of a research environment. The goal of this presentation will be to highlight the transferable skills developed during a PhD programme that will allow candidates to pivot in their career paths while still valuing the substantial investment involved in PhD study. Via a number of examples, it will be shown that a PhD provides unique skills and competencies that can generate opportunities in different career paths.
