Technical Seminar on “Smart Grid & Smart Home for Energy Conservation”

A Technical Seminar on “Smart Grid & Smart Home for Energy Conservation” was successfully organized at the Electrical Engineering Department of St. Thomas’ College of Engineering & Technology (STCET), in collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch of the college and with the technical and financial co-sponsorship of the IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter. The seminar took place on Thursday, April 27, 2023, from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in the Seminar Hall, STCET, featuring three invited speakers. The seminar attracted participation from IEEE student members, as well as faculty members who are IEEE members.

Faculty Development Program

A faculty development program with technical sponsorship from IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter was organized by Guru Nanak Institute of Technology during 11th April to 15th April, 2023. The event included 9 speakers and 35 faculty members in attendance.

Smart Bengal Hackathon- 2023

The event was organized at RCC Institute of Information Technology (RCCIIT), Kolkata from 11th April to 12th April, 2023 with technical sponsorship and technical collaboration of the chapter. The Smart Bengal Hackathon (SBH) 2023 represents a state-wide initiative aimed at engaging engineering and school students in addressing common challenges encountered in our daily lives. The overarching goal is to foster a culture of product innovation and instill a mindset of real-time problem-solving. Participants are encouraged to submit their innovative ideas within their chosen domain, spanning 16 themes and 36 problem statements, including areas such as AI, IoT, Machine Learning, and Blockchain. Collaborative efforts are encouraged, with group submissions (up to 3 students) facilitated by a mentor. The response has been overwhelming, with approximately 500 idea submissions received from prestigious colleges and schools in West Bengal and other states. After a rigorous selection process, 71 teams from the SBH-Senior category and 26 teams from the SBH-Junior category have been chosen to present their ideas in the final round.

International Conference on “Energy Systems, Drives, Power Electronics, Measurement and Sensors (ESDPEMS -2023)”

The “Energy Systems, Drives, Power Electronics, Measurement and Sensors (ESDPEMS-2023)” International Conference took place from the 16th to the 17th of February 2023 in a hybrid mode. The event was organized by Narula Institute of Technology and co-sponsored by IEEE Kolkata Section – Power and Energy Society and Industry Application Society. A total of 74 papers were submitted for consideration, with contributions from esteemed institutions such as IIT Kanpur, Jadavpur University, NIT Durgapur, University of Calcutta, Kalyani Government Engineering College, and others. Following a rigorous peer-review process, 53 papers were selected for presentation during the conference. The accepted papers were categorized into seven different tracks, each scheduled for presentation over the two-day period. To recognize outstanding contributions, a Best Paper Award was presented for each track. The roles of Convener and Joint Convener were assumed by Prof. Ambarnath Banerji, Advisor IEEE PES Student Chapter of NiT, and Dr. Bansari Deb Majumder, HOD-EE Dept, NiT, respectively. The conference attracted a total of 97 registrations, with approximately 129 faculty members, researchers, and students in attendance. The event provided a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among professionals in the field of energy systems, drives, power electronics, measurement, and sensors.

Technical Lecture on the topic “SMART Power Flow Controllers – A Necessity for Future Power Grid”

On January 24, 2023, a technical lecture titled “SMART Power Flow Controllers – A Necessity for Future Power Grid” was collaboratively organized by the IEEE-IAS Kolkata Chapter and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur. The event took place at the Seminar Hall, EE Dept., IIEST Shibpur. The lecture, presented by Dr. Kalyan Sen, President & CTO of Sen Engineering Solutions Inc, USA, focused on providing an overview of power flow controllers, future trends, and the urgent need within the power industry for cost-effective methods to transfer bulk power along desired paths. Dr. Sen emphasized the identification of underutilized transmission lines and the utilization of their dormant capacities to enhance power flow capacities instead of opting for the construction of new, lengthy, and costly transmission lines. The lecture also delved into the design and commissioning of various power electronics-based Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) controllers. The session garnered participation from a total of 65 attendees. Notably, Prof. (Dr.) Shib Sankar Saha and Mr. Arijit Basak attended the event.
