Introduction

As the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the increasing reliance on cloud computing continue to shape our interconnected world, securing data and ensuring privacy at the edge have become critical challenges. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the edge, organisations are able to address potential threats and security challenges in various scenarios. For example, in the context of intelligent transportation systems, AI at the edge facilitates the management and monitoring of the in-vehicle network as well as the Internet of Vehicles and the surrounding environment. This enhances the safety and security of autonomous vehicles and improves their decision-making capabilities. However, it is important to note that while AI offers significant benefits in detecting and preventing security violations, it could also be used by malicious actors to develop new attacks or exploit system weaknesses, an example of which is the fooling of autonomous vehicles and their visual classification algorithms using adversarial traffic signs. This special issue seeks to address emerging security needs by leveraging AI techniques and fostering innovative approaches for safeguarding edge computing environments. Both theoretical and applied studies are encouraged.
