Authors: Aliya Sharma, Samikshya Poudel, Apsara Adhikari
Abstract—Electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed through a network known as grid. With the increasing population, the demand of electricity is also increasing day-by-day. The existing grid infrastructures are unable to meet such increasing demand. Therefore, it needs to be upgraded and modernized. This paper presents the overall process, techniques and challenges of grid modernization. The major aim of this paper is to provide information about intelligent, reliable, resilient and secure grid that enables consumers to actively participate in electricity consumption as well as production (prosumers). The overall techniques and challenges for the implementation of modern grid in context of Nepal are discussed. This paper also talks about the tasks and projects (substation automation) undertaken by electricity authority towards grid modernization.
Keywords—electric power grid, distributed grid, smart grid, grid modernization
