AbstractInsulator in the transmission and distribution line provides mechanical and electrical support to the line conductors, preventing the line current to flow toward the ground path in normal operation. However, such insulators always have the risk of flashover that can turn to punture due to high transient voltage, deposition of conductive pollutants, moisture, deterioration of capacity rating due to aging, and so on. Despite the substantial research on pollution performance, flashover phenomena remain poorly understood. Experimental and numerical studies that can forecast and explain the flashover characteristics of insulators have recently gained popularity. This study covers the experimental analysis of breakdown voltage of glass insulators with and without the pollution layer on their surface. Also, the experimental result is well analyzed by simulating the electric field and potential distribution in COMSOL Multiphysics software platform using 2D geometric model of the insulator. It is discovered that when salt solution is applied to the insulator’s surface, the breakdown voltage of the insulator is reduced to half. Furthermore, the impurities influences the insulator’s breakdown voltage, and the level of pollution directly affects leakage current and insulator aging.
