Switchyard Earthing Design for a Distribution Substation
Authors: Sagun Katuwal

Abstract— For technical and safety reasons, electrical power equipment must be grounded. The earthing system effectively dissipates the flow of the fault current to the earth by maintaining the earthing resistance as low as possible. Switchyard earthing generally comprises horizontal conductors designed in the form of an earthing mat and connected with vertical rods buried under the switchyard ground. The paper presents a switchyard earthing design analysis of a 33kV distribution switchyard using the IEEE-80 Guide for Substation Earthing and Finite Element Method based simulations. The calculation based on the IEEE-80 guide was then compared with the results of the Finite Element Method performed by Electrical Transient Analyzer Program software.
