Abstract—Optimal placement and sizing of Distributed Generations (DGs) and optimal placement of Capacitors are the best ways to improve the efficiency of distribution system. In this research work, an Evaporation-Rate based Water Cycle Algorithm (ER-WCA) has been applied to optimally allocate Capacitor banks and DGs to minify the system power loss and to improve the system voltage profile along the radial distribution network. Three types of technical objectives were considered i.e. minimizing active power loss, improving system voltage profile, and strengthening Voltage Stability Index (VSI). Tests were carried-out for three cases i.e. placement of Capacitors only, placement of DGs only, and placement of Capacitors and DGs (with unity pf) simultaneously. Results achieved from simulations performed on IEEE 33-bus test system and IEEE 69-bus test system using ER-WCA were better than that given by other popular metaheuristic algorithms. For IEEE 69-bus test system, the power loss was minimized by 35.34%, 69.14%, 94.36%, and 96.24% respectively for the four cases when compared to the base case. Simulations were also carried out for two radial systems of Nepal viz. New-Chabahil feeder, and Daachhi feeder of Kathmandu. Results showed that using DGs and CBs simultaneously is far better than using them alone.
