Abstract—Lighting accounts for a significant portion of building energy consumption globally. These portions can be reduced by the usage of different control strategies like occupancy-based, daylight integration, connected lighting system along with time of day control, DALI, DMX. Each control strategies have their own unique set of parameters that affect the performance of the lighting quality as well as energy consumption pattern. During the illumination design, the control strategy must be chosen concerning the need, interest and comfortability of the occupant. This paper discusses different types of lighting control strategies being used currently with briefly discussing its usage area, pros and cons. With the advancement of sensor technologies and new strategies in sensing the environment, the lighting can also be used as a tool for optimization in the building automation which is also discussed in the paper. Studies suggest that an optimum balance point of the lighting control system must be achieved for the significant potential for energy savings.
