Abstract- The modernization of electrical power systems is an ongoing process and in recent times, it can be observed that there is a clear upsurge of several types of microcontroller-based fault detecting and isolating systems with different communication features or sensor systems. These systems make measurements beyond conventional sensing of voltages and currents of the lines and extend it to real time analysis of the occurred faults. However, at the same time, it can be seen that there is a clear lack of a basic model of such systems which may lead to the development of fault detection and isolating systems without considerations of the most critical parameters these systems are attempting to tackle and replace. This paper implements a microcontroller-based fault detection system and in what capacity they can be used to develop versatile systems with unique features at low costs. The characteristics of the faults are analyzed in terms of how immediate the nominal parameters are disrupted by faults and how this affects the selection of the microcontroller-based system and their execution time. The basic system is presented with both the simulation of the system in an ideal situation and the implementation of hardware demonstrating the limitations. The simulation has been validated by the experimental results of the system as the general tendency of the measurement of the experiments with voltage and the fault isolation carried out, within a range, is in line. The relevant design paradigm used is such that our basic model may be accessible to future researchers to adapt to their applications and conduct more experiments with.
