PSO based controller for the voltage and frequency control in a VSI based DG unit during transient operation

  Abstract—Distributed generators comprise of micro energy resources such as solar, wind, fuel cell, micro-hydro, etc. which supplies power to the load through various power conversion interfaces. Such generating units can be operated in autonomous mode or can be connected with the grid. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based voltage and frequency controller is modeled for a voltage source inverter (VSI) based DG unit. The controller consists of two control loop; an inner current control loop and an outer voltage-frequency control loop. A voltage source inverter (VSI) with a DC source has been modeled as a DG unit being connected with a grid and supplying a load demanding active and reactive power. The parameters of current control loop have been optimized using PSO. Furthermore, PSO algorithm is implemented in the Voltage-frequency(Vf) control loop for the auto-tuning mode to control the voltage and frequency of the DG unit within specified limit during the transient operation i.e. when DG shifts to the islanding operating condition or autonomous mode) and during load change condition. PSO based controller for VSI based DG unit has been designed and implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The controller regulates the voltage magnitude within the acceptable limit of 10%. The frequency deviation is obtained very less than 3% limit. In addition, harmonic distortions in voltage and current waveform has also been studied during transient operation and found to be within acceptable limits.
