Abstract— Integration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution network has several benefits such as increased reliability, reduction in active power loss, improvement of voltage profile, support of reactive power etc. To attain the maximum benefit, DG needs to be placed at optimal location with optimal size. However, integration of DG into the distribution network may have negative impact on the protection setup that may be due to change in short circuit level, magnitude and direction of fault current, sensitivity of relay etc. For proper placement of DG, it is required to first allocate the size and location of DGs to maximize benefits and then design the protection system accordingly. This paper proposes methodology for siting and sizing of the DG into the system with prime objective as to minimize loss of the system and then optimize the settings of the overcurrent relay to host it into the system. Genetic Algorithm is used to solve both allocation and relay coordination optimization problem. Two cases have been considered in this analysis a) integration of single DG into the network and b) integration of three DGs into the network. The optimized protection system is analyzed for all the possible scenario with and without DGs. Further the system was tested with minimum operating time and coordination time interval (CTI) of relay considering electromagnetic overcurrent relays and then again considering numerical relays having reduced operating time and CTI. The proposed method was tested and verified on a widely used three-feeder test distribution network. Methodology was implemented in MATLAB and results obtained during various stages were validated using ETAP software.
