Effect of Harmonics In Radial Distribution System

Authors: Bishal Gautam, Lalit Bikram Rana

Abstract—This paper presents, the impact of harmonics in radial distribution systems. Harmonics are caused by mainly due to the presence of nonlinear loads, such as computers, electronic devices, and fluorescent lighting, which generate currents that are not sinusoidal. The presence of harmonics in distribution network can lead to a number of issues, including overheating of transformers and motors, power quality problems, and increased losses. In this study, a direct approach method based on backward/forward sweep technique forming BIBC and A BCBV matrix has been used for the analysis of harmonics in distribution network. Due to its simple techniques used in the proposed method, the direct approach does not require to build the formation of Jacobian matrix or admittance matrix and LU which usually used in the conventional load flow methods. The proposed methodology used in this paper can be easily extended to different radial distribution network configurations. The proposed algorithm is validated by applying it on various standard 5-bus, 13-bus and 34-bus test system.
