Abstract—The electricity distribution in sparsely populated mountain terrain is more of a social service than a business, development act for the electricity utility like Nepal Electricity Authority, which makes it a resource-constrained job. Proper planning and analysis is necessary in such resource-constrained condition to ensure the reliable delivery of the services. This paper identifies the challenges in operation of electricity supply system in sparsely populated mountainous terrain under resource-constrained condition considering a case of Palung Distribution feeder in Nepal. The system under study has been analyzed to assess the performance metrics against the established utility guidelines. The extensive study of the system has been conducted using an optimization algorithm to assess the voltage profile and the total losses under different system configurations. Based on the results obtained from the studies, the modifications and the reinforcement measures viz. capacitor placement and conductor upgrade, to improve the system performance has been proposed.
Keywords— Distribution system, voltage profile, power loss, optimization, compensation.
