Abstract— This paper deals with the implementation of Automatic Power Factor Correction using Capacitor Bank. The objectives are to reduce the line losses, reduce the reactive power and to detect the lead and lag condition by improving the power factor. The power factor of the load is measured by the zero crossing and phase shift detector. The system detects the leading and lagging condition by analyzing the output from zero crossing detectors. Depending upon the condition, the required capacitor bank is switched on or off accordingly. The overall performance of the system can be monitored by the Graphical User Interface and serial monitor. The automatic system developed has an error percentage approximately of 8.64%.
Keywords— Reactive power, Power factor Correction, Lead and Lag detection, zero crossing, Graphical User display
