Abstract—Reducing distribution system power loss can generate additional revenue and can delay the upgradation of infrastructures in a distribution network. Distribution Network Reconfiguration is a method to reduce power loss and improve voltage profile by reconfiguring the network topology. Appropriate incorporation of the distributed generations (DGs) available in the network gives an additional advantage to reduce power loss and improve voltage profile. This paper presents simultaneous network reconfiguration handling DG penetration using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) Algorithm, where the DGs contribute to active power and reactive power. Test results demonstrated that the active power loss is reduced by 91.60% and 96.56% for IEEE 33 Bus system and IEEE 69 Bus system respectively when reconfiguring the distribution network after installing DGs capable of injecting both active power and reactive power. Test results using ABC algorithm are better than those given by other popular metaheuristic algorithms.
