Abstract—Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are of primary interest to the global energy society these days. Of all RES, solar photovoltaic systems and doubly fed induction generator-based wind farms have been receiving considerable attraction. However, there are few challenges while integrating them in conventional power grids. The decoupled and inertia-less power sources create stability issues during contingencies as well as in normal operations. This paper first introduces the basics of power system stability and portrays the potential risk during power system disturbances. Several stability indicators have been discussed for the assessment of transient stability of a power system. The authors have presented conclusions made by recent research focused on the response of the power grids having wind and photovoltaic plants during line faults. Based on the previous studies, it can be concluded that the transient stability of the modern power grids is dependent on the fault location, the severity of the fault, and the penetration level of RES. The paper finally discusses the technologies used to mitigate the adverse effect of RES integration concerning the transient stability of the grid.
