Abstract— Integrating renewable energy resources (wind & Photovoltaic) in power network can minimize grid losses and reduce carbon footprint. However, intermittent nature of RES, significantly reduces system inertia that affects systems damping capability to regulate primary frequency control. With the higher penetration of PV, the induced frequency oscillation can violate the grid operating requirements which can probably threaten the security and stability of the grid. In this paper, a droop controlled Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is proposed to reduce frequency oscillation by enhancing primary frequency controllability according to grid code and facilitate an increased level of PV penetration. Fossil fuel based conventional generator unit is replaced and the impact of PV penetration at various level is investigated. The optimal Sizing and location is also achieved through scenario and comparative performance analysis in this research. Moreover, battery state-of-charge recovery are also included in this study which addresses the over frequency issues. The different scenarios are analyzed on IEEE modified 9 bus system and the simulation results with the droop-controlled BESS showed the compliance of grid criteria for frequency and voltage up to 30% PV penetration.
