WIEve EPILOGUE 2.0

WIEve Epilogue 2.0 was a 12-hour hackathon organized by IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group (WIE AG) at Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT) in collaboration with the IEEE Computer Society (CS) FISAT and the IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) Kerala Section. This event aimed to bring together aspiring engineers and developers to collaborate, innovate, and create solutions to various challenges.

The inauguration ceremony of WIEveEpilogue 2.0 began with a prayer followed by the Code of Ethics presented by Veena Prakash, PES WIP, IEEE FISAT SB emphasizing the importance of integrity, respect, and responsibility in the engineering profession. Mr. Basil K Jeemon, Branch Counselor, IEEE FISAT SB, then delivered the Welcome Address, expressing gratitude to the attendees and highlighting the significance of the event.

The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Mini Ulanat, Immediate Past Chair, IEEE Kerala Section and Region 10 Deputy Coordinator India Area. She delivered her insights on women empowerment.

Dr. Jacob Thomas V delivered the principal’s address. Dr. Mini P R, Vice Principal FISAT felicitated the speakers and expressed her appreciation for their valuable contributions to the field of engineering. This fosters a sense of community and  reinforces the idea that the event was a collaborative effort. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Anjali Harish, WIE Secretary , IEEE FISAT SB, expressing gratitude to all attendees and participants for their contributions and making the event a success.

Following the inauguration, Dr. Mini Ulanat took the stage to deliver a talk on the topic ‘Navigating Challenges – Insights from a Leadership Journey.’ Dr. Ulanat, a respected leader in the field of engineering and technology, shared her personal experiences and insights on leadership, offering valuable lessons to the participants. She began her session with an engaging networking activity. She encouraged participants to introduce themselves and share their goals for the hackathon. This ice-breaking activity helped create a sense of community among the participants, fostering an environment of open communication and collaboration. Throughout the talk, she engaged the audience by asking questions and allowing them to share their thoughts. This interactive session helped the students to absorb the key message.

The hackathon officially began at 6 pm, and the participants dived into their projects, working tirelessly through the night to develop innovative solutions. Throughout the hackathon, mentors, Mr. Joel Nickson and Mr. Samanuai A,  were available to provide guidance and support, ensuring that the teams stayed on track and overcome any obstacles they encountered. Through the night, the participants stayed awake determined to complete the solution.

On July 27, 2024, the first round of eliminations was conducted by the mentors towards the end of the hackathon. This round helped narrow down the field to the most promising projects. After the hackathon, the finalist teams were given time to prepare for their presentations.

The final round of evaluations began at 9:00 am. Teams presented their projects to a panel of judges, who assessed each project based on criteria such as innovation, feasibility, technical implementation, and overall impact. The presentations were thorough, and the judges, Ms. Sona Mary Louis and Ms. Senu Abi, engaged with the teams, asking questions and providing feedback.

The winners of WIEve Epilogue 2.0 were announced during the closing ceremony, marking the end of the hackathon. The event concluded with a sense of accomplishment and learning for all participants.

The impact of WIEve Epilogue 2.0 was significant. The hackathon not only provided a platform for participants to enhance their technical skills but also emphasized the importance of teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. Overall, WIEve Epilogue 2.0 was a resounding success, fostering innovation, learning, and camaraderie among the participants.

Pre-events

In preparation for the main event, a 3-day online bootcamp was organized to help participants gear up for the hackathon. This bootcamp was designed to provide essential knowledge and skills that would be useful during the hackathon.

  • Day 1 – July 20, 2024

‘Introduction to Hackathon’ led by Mr. Ashmin Jayson, the winner of .hack() organized by IEEE MACE SB. He shared insights on how to approach a hackathon, strategies for beginners, and useful platforms for hackathon participants.

  • Day 2 – July 22, 2024

The session focused on ‘Front-end Development,’ with Ms. Naeema Ziyad, the Website Committee Co-Lead at IEEE Smart Cities, as the speaker. She covered HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap, demonstrating how these tools play a crucial role in front-end development. She also demonstrated the working of these tools.

  • Day 3 – July 24, 2024

The final session was on ‘Back-end Development,’ again led by Mr. Ashmin Jayson. He explained backend development concepts and introduced platforms that could be used for backend work.
