Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Electrification Challenges for Wellington’s Distribution Network

Join the Electrical Engineering Group for a Presentation by Nick Merrington, Engineering Planning Manager at Wellington Electricity, on the challenges associated with accommodating the ever-increasing electrification of transport on Wellington Electricity’s network.

In addition to our Electrical Engineering Group members, we extend the invitation to members of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Whanagnui-a-tara, Wellington, isn’t known for being particularly sunny and solar uptake hasn’t been as rapid as in other parts of the country.  However, within Wellington, there is a natural appetite for transport electrification. Wellington Electricity has been busy preparing to supply everything from electric planes to electric cars, electric buses, electric trains and even electric ferries.  Each of these new loads presents challenges not only to provide capacity but to maintain the network’s high level of system security.

Following the presentation, Nick will be available to answer your questions.

The presentation will start at 5:30pm sharp. For those attending in-person, drinks and nibbles will be provided from 5:00pm. An online registration option is available, too.

• An overview of Wellington Electricity’s meshed 11kV network and operating principles.
• An overview of the new electric loads and the challenges they present.

Presenter Bio:

Nick Merrington is the Engineering Planning Manager at Wellington Electricity.  He has a combined Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree from the University of Auckland.

Prior to working in distribution, Nick worked in both the construction and electrical transmission industries.
