Session on Self Awareness and Stress Management

On September 17, 2023, IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter organized an enriching session on “Self Awareness and Stress Management” as part of the All Kerala Student Congress ’23 hosted by IEEE LINK. Held at TKMCE Kollam, the event aimed to equip participants with insights on maintaining a healthy lifestyle amidst demanding academic or work schedules.

The session delved into the multidisciplinary approach to stress management, emphasizing the importance of awareness at the levels of mind, body, and intellect. Exploring key elements such as consciousness, self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-image, the event provided a holistic understanding of stress and its impact on individuals.

Participants gained valuable knowledge on the physiological changes associated with stress, including the activation of the pituitary gland, release of hormones, and the “fight or flight” reaction. The session highlighted the global significance of stress, as outlined by the World Health Organization, and the need for a holistic approach to well-being, considering the harmony between body, mind, and soul.

Expert speakers shared methods for achieving sound physical health, good mental health, and inner peace through practices such as moderate and nutritious eating, regular exercise, adequate rest, and relaxation. Alternative strategies for stress reduction, including aerobic exercise, music, writing, and recreational activities, were also discussed.

The event further explored laughter therapy as a powerful tool for combating various ailments and the role of mind-body interventions such as yoga and meditation in promoting relaxation and reversing molecular reactions associated with ill-health and depression.

The session also touched upon the significance of neuro-transmitters like serotonin, oxytocin, endorphins, and dopamine in influencing mood, happiness, anxiety levels, and emotional balance. Practical strategies for boosting serotonin levels, including exposure to sunlight, regular exercise, and a healthy diet, were highlighted.

In the context of self-awareness, participants were educated on the importance of recognizing their personality traits, values, habits, emotions, and psychological needs. The significance of self-awareness in decision-making, communication, and personal development was emphasized.

The event concluded with practical tips on cultivating self-awareness, including creating space and time, practicing mindfulness, journaling, and seeking feedback from loved ones. The importance of self-awareness in counseling and coaching was also highlighted, emphasizing its role as a fundamental tool for facilitating positive and lasting change.
