Powering the Future: Innovative Assets Management and Maintenance Technology in Power Systems

Anchor: Ms S Neha

The event commenced with the Welcome Address from Dr Leesha Paul (Vice Chairperson, IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter) followed by the Relevance of PES Day delivered by Er M Anil (Secretary, IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter).

The talk session then commenced with Er Biju stating the need for assets management and the challenges faced by the power industry in asset management and the need for innovative technologies like predictive maintenance and GIS platforms to overcome these challenges. Traditional asset management lacked accurate tracking and recording of assets. However, with the advancement of IoT sensors and related hardware, smarter, more efficient asset management techniques can optimize asset lifecycle costs. The speaker then emphasized the importance of choosing the right technology for asset management and utilizing predictive maintenance to improve equipment life and reduce costs. Various online monitoring techniques and smart asset health management processes can help experts evaluate the health condition of the assets and suggest mitigation actions, reducing costs and improving overall asset lifetime. The speaker then proceeded to discuss various technological advancements in asset management, including machine learning, augmented reality, digital twins, and big data analytics, and emerging trends such as optical communications, integrated monitoring systems, cybersecurity, and UAVs for the maintenance and inspection of power lines. The speaker finally emphasized the importance of trusting and using new technologies such as cameras with vision and AI algorithms, big data, and machine learning in the future of smart asset management. The session was followed by a Q&A session, a virtual photograph to capture the essence of the session, and presenting the speaker with a virtual memento as a token of the team’s gratitude.

The event concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Ms Diya Jose (Content Writer, Student Leadership Team ‘23 – IEEE Education Society Kerala Section) expressing the team’s gratitude to Engineer Biju for sharing his experience on innovative asset management and maintenance technology in power systems. The host then thanked all the event volunteers and participants for making the event a success and encouraging participation in their upcoming events. The host at last reminds participants to provide their feedback through the feedback form and concludes with a promise to return with new and exciting events.
