Inauguration Ceremony

IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter organized a virtual ceremony, under the coordination of the Professional Team and the Student Leadership Team, on 14th July 2021 at 7.00 pm IST. The main agenda of the event was to inaugurate the Education Society Kerala Chapter, launch the website of EdSoc Kerala Chapter, and honour Dr. KPP Pillai, most senior Life Senior Member of IEEE Kerala Section. The guests invited for the event were Dr. Edmundo Tovar, President of IEEE Education Society, Prof. Rosa Maria Vasconcelos, Vice President MGA IEEE Education Society, Mr. Deepak Mathur, Director IEEE R10, Dr. Sameer SM, Secretary IEEE R10, Dr. VK Mathews, Founder & Executive Chairman of IBS Software, Dr. KR Suresh Nair, Chair IEEE India Council, Mrs. Sarada Jayakrishnan, Chair of IEEE Kerala Section, Dr. KPP Pillai, Life Senior Member of IEEE Kerala Section and Dr. Rajasree MS, Vice-Chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. Along with them, several prominent IEEE members including Prof. Muhammed Kasim, Founder Chair of IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, Er CM Varughese, Chair of IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, Dr. K Kesavaswamy, Advisor of IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, and many others graced the occasion.

Dr. Edmundo Tovar

Dr. Edmundo Tovar is the President of IEEE Education Society and is the International and Europe Chairperson of IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference. He is a Professor of Enterprise Information Technology at the Technical University of Madrid and leads an innovative group in education at UPM applied to open education. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors in the Open Courseware Consortium between 2009 to 2013, as an Executive Director of OCW office of the UPM between 2008 to 2012 and as an Executive Director of the Open Education Office at UPM between 2013 to 2016.

In presence of all the attendees, Dr. Edmundo Tovar officially inaugurated the IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter wishing it a prosperous future. Following the inauguration, Dr. Tovar presented his address about the Education Society. In the note followed, Dr. Tovar provided an insight into the ideologies, methodologies, and initiatives of the Education Society. Further, he discussed the standards, publications, and memberships of EdSoc and provided an induction into the possibilities that EdSoc offers. After that, a virtual memento was provided to Dr. Edmundo Tovar, on behalf of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, as a token of appreciation for his presence. Dr. Tovar graciously accepted a virtual memento presented to him on behalf of the Education Society Kerala Chapter and invited the Chapter to contribute to the newsletter of the Education Society with a report of this event.

Mr. Deepak Mathur

Mr. Deepak Mathur is the Director of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region) with a strong leadership background in IEEE at Section, Council, Region and MGA (Member Geographic Activities) levels. He is a recipient of the IEEE Region 10 Outstanding Volunteer Award and IEEE MGA Achievement Award. Apart from that, he is a professional with more than 37-years of professional experience in the fields of electronics, telecommunication, IT infrastructure.

Mr. Deepak Mathur officially launched the website of the IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter. After the launch, Mr. Deepak Mathur provided an overview of the IEEE Region 10. He gave an insight into the history, sections, and Executive Committee of Region 10. Followed by that, an overview of the priorities and initiatives of Region 10 was also mentioned. The Education Society Kerala Chapter presented a virtual memento to Mr. Deepak Mathur appreciating his presence.

Dr. K P P Pillai

Dr. KPP Pillai is the Life Senior Member of IEEE. He was the Chairman of the Q.I.P Committee of AICTE and was the executive secretary of the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi. He is the Founder Director of the School of Technology and Applied Sciences, MG University. He has received a Special Award from the Chief Minister of Kerala for supporting the growth of Govt. Engineering College, Kannur.

Dr. KPP Pillai was honoured during the ceremony for his contributions to the field of education. He was awarded a memento for his unparallel dedication and support for providing quality education. Followed by that, he provided a note about his experience with IEEE, giving an account of the impacts he received both in personal and professional life. In the note, he also spoke about his achievements and journey in IEEE and ignited all the minds with the possibilities that he explored.

Dr. Rajasree M S

Dr. Rajasree M S is the Vice-Chancellor of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. She has served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala and as the Principal of Government Engineering College, Barton hill. She has been serving the academic community for the past 28 years in teaching, research and taking leadership roles in several academic activities.

During the ceremony she addressed the attendees, giving them a glimpse into the academia of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. In the note followed, she provided an insight into the university. She discussed the frameworks that the university follows in bringing students to new heights. Along with that, the industry connected initiatives and industry minor programs offered by the university were also discussed. Following that, a virtual memento was gifted to Dr. Rajasree M S, on behalf of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, as a token of appreciation for the talk.

Dr. V K Mathews

Dr. V K Mathews is the Founder and Executive Chairman of IBS Software. He is the chairman of GTECH and the executive council member of NASSCOM. He is a much sought after speaker at various global aviation events including those organized by IATA, ICAO and AACO.

In the ceremony he delivered a talk on the Industry Expectations. In his note, he discussed the change in the digital economy. The uprise of the next phase of digitalization and that of automation also came across in his note. Further, the prospect of campus-only courses and impactful changes that personalization could bring was also addressed. After the note, a virtual memento was presented to Dr. VK Mathews, on behalf of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, as a token of appreciation for his presence.

Prof. Rosa Maria Castro Fernandes Vasconcelos

Prof. Rosa Maria Castro Fernandes Vasconcelos is the Vice President of MGA at the IEEE Education Society. She has a PhD in Textile Engineering and Chemistry. She was the President of the Engineering Courses Council and the Vice President of the Engineering School.

During her address, she spoke about the developments of the Education Society and expressed her appreciation for EdSoc Kerala Chapter. After that, a virtual memento was presented  to Prof. Rosa Maria Vasconcelos, on behalf of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, for her participation.

Dr. K R Suresh Nair

Dr. KR Suresh Nair is the Chair of IEEE India Council. He is also the Chief Technology Advisor of the Foundation for Innovation in Social Entrepreneurship. Along with that, he also serves as the Founder and CEO of Design Alpha, Founder and Managing Director of Biphoton Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

In his address, he gave an insight into the IEEE India Council and the member benefit approach of the Education Society. He gave glance into the activities, initiatives and areas of focus of the Council. After he concluded, a virtual memento was presented to him as a token of appreciation for her presence.

Dr. Sameer S M

Dr. Sameer SM is the Secretary of IEEE Region 10 (Asia-Pacific Region). He is Professor at NIT, Calicut. He has served as the Treasurer, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the IEEE Kerala Section and also as the Treasurer of IEEE India Council.

During the ceremony, he addressed the attendees and spoke about the importance of educational activities and the impact they brought. Along with that, he suggested some initiatives for the EdSoc Kerala Chapter like internship programs, skills development events, and orientation programs. After his address, he was provided with a virtual memento as a token of appreciation for his presence and suggestions.

Mrs. Sarada Jayakrishnan

Mrs. Sarada Jayakrishnan is the current Chair of the IEEE Kerala Section. She is also the DGM(Operations) at Terumo Penpol. She has served as the Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer at IEEE Kerala Section and have been the Chair of Women in Engineering AG Kerala Section.

During the event, she presented a presidential address. In the note followed, She spoke about the initiatives behind the formation of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter. On behalf of the Section, she expressed her support for the chapter’s future endeavours. Adding to that, she pointed out the progress that the section has been making over time, which enabled it to stay as one of the top 3 sections in the world. On behalf of the Education Society Kerala Chapter, she was gifted with a virtual memento.

Ms. Parvathy then invited the Student Activities Chair of Education Society, Mr. Sarath S to talk on the Student Branch initiatives. Mr. Sarath talked about the future initiatives of the Society, namely MD session to increase the membership of Education Society,  Student Ambassadors program to elevate student members, STEP initiative to provide practical opportunities for students, Digital Library initiative to provide resources for members, support for emerging Student Branches, Inter SB events and Training programs oriented in active learning ideology in areas like CAD, MATLAB and so on. Announcing the onboarding of two Student Branches into the Education Society, Mr. Sarath concluded his note.

Ms. Parvathy then presented a virtual memento to Mrs. Sarada Jayakrishnan, on behalf of the Education Society Kerala Chapter for her constant support for the chapter. With the event reaching its conclusion, Prof. Gayathri invited the Secretary of Education Society Kerala Chapter Er. Jithin to provide a vote of thanks. On behalf of the Education Society Kerala Chapter, Er. Jithin expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries who were present all through the event even in the middle of busy schedules. He also thanked all the attendees for their constant support. With that, the event concluded.
