Mapping Universe in 3D

IEEE Education Society Kerala Chapter organized a talk on the topic “Mapping the Universe in 3D ” on Saturday, 21st May 2022 at 7:00 PM IST. The session was hosted on a virtual platform,Google Meet. The session was handled by Dr. Anand Narayanan, Professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the Indian Institute of Space and Technology, Trivandrum. The specific objective of this session was to provide an insight into how astronomers have carefully put together a map of the universe, revealing its three-dimensional architecture through long years of meticulous observations.

To commence the event,Mr Akshay R S from the Student leadership team invited Dr. Rajesh Joseph Abraham, Joint Secretary, 2022, IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter for the welcome note. In his address, he welcomed the respected speaker and all the delegates into the session. He also introduced the speaker to the audience. In response to the invitation, Dr. Anand Narayanan came forward and began the session by explaining that the 3D architecture of the universe is one of the ambitious projects that happened in the domain of astrophysics.

He further provided an overview on galaxies and the phenomenon of redshift and blueshift of galaxies and how it is helpful to measure the distance of galaxies from the earth.Further he discussed various galaxy surveys. He explained about the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS) and its contribution in 3D mapping of the universe.

Following that the session was then opened for Q&A. In response to that, several queries were put forward. Dr. Anand Narayanan had addressed all the queries with detailed explanations. There were a total of 99 participants and the session received great response from the participants.

With the event reaching its conclusion,Dr. Leesha Paul, Vice-Chair, 2022, IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter came forward with a thanking note. In her note, she expressed gratitude to the resource person and all the attendees on behalf of the IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter. With that thanking note, the event was concluded.
