Webinar on ‘Grid Flexibility to Enable Renewable Energy Integration’

IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) Kerala Chapter in collaboration with the KSEB Engineers Association & IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Kerala Chapter organized a webinar on the topic ‘Grid Flexibility to Enable Renewable Energy Integration’ on September 11, from 7.00 PM to 8.00 PM IST. Er. M Anil, IEEE Senior Member & Deputy Chief Engineer (Retd) KSEB Ltd. was the speaker for the day. The event was carried out in the presence of prominent members like Chapter Chair – Mr. Varughese CM and Founder Chair Prof. Muhammed Kasim.

The session was intended to give an insight into the grid technologies for enabling the integration of renewable energy. The event began with the welcome note of Dr. Leesha Paul,  Vice-Chair of IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter. In her address, she welcomed the respected speaker and all the delegates into the session. Followed by that, Dr. Krishnakumar, Director of Centre for Excellence in Business and Administration came forward to provide an introduction about the esteemed speaker, Er. M Anil. In his address, Dr. Krishnakumar gave a glance into the life of Er. Anil. With that introduction note, Dr. Krishnakumar invited the esteemed speaker for the session.

In response to the invitation, Er. Anil came forward and thanked everyone for the welcome. Following that, he began the session with an overview of the three buzz words in the Modern Power System Operation, namely Decarbonisation, Digitalisation and Decentralisation. After that, Er. Anil pointed out some solutions that can help in enabling Renewable Energy Integration. They were as follows, utility-scale batteries, renewable power to heat, renewable power to hydrogen, super grids and many more. He gave a detailed description of each of these solutions, with a detailed account of its efficiency, advantages, and technical requirements. In support of that, the various aspects of power to heat system, power to hydrogen system and other systems were discussed along. He also provided some real-world examples of each of these solutions to provide an in-depth understanding of their mechanism.

Following that, a comparison of various storage technologies was brought into the discussion. This comparison was in terms of efficiency, storage capacity, discharge time and maturity of the technology. Followed by that, Er. Anil moved to the next section where he discussed the Virtual Power Lines (VPL) and its constituents. Here, he pointed out a  block diagram of VPL to give more insight into the technology. With that, Er. Anil concluded his webinar and opened the session for Q&A.

In response to that, numerous questions were put forward by the attendees. Er. Anil addressed all the queries with a detailed explanation. Following that, Dr. Bobby Philip, Secretary of IEEE PES Kerala Chapter came forward to deliver the vote of thanks. In his note, Dr. Bobby thanked Er. Anil and the attendees for making the session active. The webinar ended with that note.
