IEEE in Australia
The IEEE is the world’s leading professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. IEEE has more than 430,000 members including approximately 120,000 student members in more than 160 countries.
The Australia Council currently represents 7 sections, 65 chapters, 15 affinity groups and 27 student branches across Australia. The Council supports a range of activities for its sections:
- Coordinates Australian visits for international distinguished lecturers
- Liaise with other technical and professional societies at a national level
- Promote IEEE through national activities
- Supports Australian hosting of major IEEE conferences
- Acts or responds on behalf of Australian sections as required from time to time

The Australia Council was established in 1986 following the formation of state-based sections in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. More information on its history is available at the Engineering and Technology History Wiki.
The Council is part of IEEE Region 10.

Memorandum of Understanding with Engineers Australia
On 11 August 2025, IEEE Australia and Engineers Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote cooperation between the members of these organisations. This includes through joint activities and exchanging information and participating in standards development.
IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members – advised and proctored by an IEEE member, and often supported by an IEEE Student Branch – compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems.
IEEE Region 10 hosts a number of significant events for our region including TENSYMP, TENCON and HTC.

The Australia Council support a range of Student and Volunteer Awards annually.
Volunteer Awards
These awards aim to celebrate excellence in volunteering, encourage continued engagement and leadership, and promote a culture of service and inclusion within the IEEE community. They highlight the vital role that dedicated individuals and Organisational Units (OUs) play in advancing IEEE’s mission and vision.
In 2025, the IEEE Australia Council will be awarding the following individual awards:
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Volunteer Award
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Young Professional (YP) Volunteer Award
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Women In Engineering (WIE) Volunteer Award
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Student Volunteer Award
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Life Member (LM) Award
Two additional awards will also be bestowed:
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding OU (Organisational Unit) Award
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Event/Initiative Award

Nominations for individual awards are open to all IEEE members affiliated to any of the Australian Sections. Self-nominations are allowed. Nominations for non-individual awards must be submitted by OU Officers (e.g., Student Branch, Technical Society Chapter, Affinity Group, or Section Officers).
Please note: The current awards will take into consideration of contributions and initiatives in the calendar year 2024. Please note that there will be another call for nominations based on 2025 activities later this year.

Student Branch Awards
Student branch chairs, section chairs, and section SACs are invited to submit nominations. Nominations will be evaluated based on the number of events hosted and reported from December 1st of the previous year to November 30th of that year. Two awards will be presented:
- IEEE Australia Council Best Student Branch ($500 AUD cash prize)
- IEEE Australia Council Outstanding Student Branch ($200 AUD cash prize)
