GRSS – Seminar by NASA Scientist Dr. Rajat Bindlish: Advances in High Resolution Soil Moisture Remote Sensing and Its Applications

The NASA–ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, launched on July 30, 2025, provides global observations of Earth’s land surface dynamics that support multiple Earth science disciplines. NISAR delivers a global 200‑m soil moisture product with a 12‑day revisit (6 days when combining ascending and descending passes) and a target accuracy of 0.06 m³/m³ in regions with vegetation water content below 5 kg/m².
Accurate soil moisture estimates are essential for improving crop modeling because they control near-surface water and energy exchanges and influence plant water and nutrient uptake. The Agriculture Land Information System (AgLIS) integrates the Noah‑MP hydrology model with the DSSAT crop model to represent hydrologic and crop growth processes more realistically. AgLIS provides a robust framework for agricultural productivity assessment and decision-making. Results from Iowa and Illinois demonstrate the value of remotely sensed soil moisture and LAI for improving agricultural yield estimates.
