Implementing Image Processing Algorithms on FPGAs – 11-13 April 2016

The IEEE SA Computer Society is proud to host Associate Professor Donald Bailey for a three day workshop on the use of FPGAs for image processing applications. FPGAs are increasingly being used as an implementation platform for real-time image processing applications because their structure is able to exploit spatial and temporal parallelism. Unfortunately, simply porting an algorithm onto an FPGA often gives disappointing results, because most image processing algorithms have been optimised for a serial processor. Therefore it is necessary to transform the algorithm to efficiently exploit this inherent parallelism. Donald Bailey has over 30 years of experience in image processing and machine vision and has conducted extensive research in mapping image processing algorithms onto FPGAs.

The workshop will be held from the 11th to 13th April 2016 at the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes campus. Participants in this course will take home a wealth of FPGA course notes, an extensive VHDL image processing library, and each will receive a Terasic DE0-CV FPGA board and camera package valued at $280.

For any questions, please contact Andrew McDonnell at 0412 060 324 or email him at andrew.mcdonnell@ieee.org.

Abstract: On 7 March 2014 Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 carrying 239 passengers and crew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing lost contact with Air Traffic Control and was subsequently reported missing. Dr Gordon is a member of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau MH370 search advisory team and will describe how Bayesian statistical estimation methods have been used to process Inmarsat satellite communication hand-shake data and produce a probability distribution of MH370 flight paths that defines the current search zone in the southern Indian Ocean.

Three Day Workshop – Implementing Image Processing Algorithms on FPGAs

The workshop will be held from the 13th to 15th April 2015 at the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes campus. Participants in this course will take home a wealth of FPGA course notes, an extensive VHDL image processing library, and each will receive a Terasic DE0-CV FPGA board and camera package valued at $280.

This workshop is now fully subscribed. Please e-mail Adam Gatt if you would like to be notified if a position becomes available, or if you would like to be notified the next time the workshop is being run.

For any questions, please contact Adam Gatt at (08) 7389 0052 or email him at adam.gatt@dsto.defence.gov.au.
