Topic: Adaptive Drones and Federated Learning: A New Paradigm for Multimedia IoT Networks

Abstract:

Federated learning constitutes an emergent paradigm for addressing tasks associated with multimedia (e.g., video, audio, image). Rather than transmitting data streams such as video, audio, and images collected by mobile clients and Internet of Things (IoT) devices directly to servers, these data are initially preprocessed utilizing the computational capabilities of the devices themselves. Federated learning, which has attracted significant attention, further enhances the performance of such services by orchestrating the training of non-identically distributed (non-IID) multimedia data across different devices. This study explores federated learning in multimedia tasks, with a particular emphasis on drones as communication relays in an IoT network. We address the challenges of random location distribution, communication difficulties, and the complexities of cloud server processing. To overcome these, we propose an approach using adaptive drones and a dedicated network. We introduce a Lyapunov drift-based learning optimization (LDLO) and a multi-target Ford-Fulkerson algorithm (MFFA) for task allocation and drone movement optimization. A simulation study validates our methods’ effectiveness in reducing latency and energy consumption.

Biography:

Chaofeng Zhang is currently an assistant professor in Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology (AIIT), Tokyo, Japan. He received the B.Eng degree in Soochow University, China, in 2011. He also received M.Eng and Ph.D. degree in Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2016 and 2019, respectively. His research interests include cloud computing, full-duplex communication, wireless positioning technology. Dr. Zhang serves as an Associate Editor for IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems; Journal of Frontiers in Space Technologies. He got IEEE VTS Tokyo Chapter 2016 student paper award in 2016 and got the best presentation award in A3 Annual Workshop on Next Generation Internet and Network Security. From March 2017 to April 2017, he was a visiting scholar at Soochow University, China.
