The History of IEEE Control Systems Society Philippines Chapter

On July 20, 2022, the petition to form an IEEE Control System Society Philippines Chapter was approved by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It was spearheaded by the eight founding volunteers in collaboration with more than 50 founding members.

Prior to the approval of the petition, several meetings were conducted. On October 16, 2021, an online meeting attended by eager professionals was graced by Dr. Rhandley D. Cajote, Chair of the IEEE Philippines Section, as well as volunteers and active members of the group. The unwavering support of the IEEE Philippines Section inspired the group to establish the Control Systems Society Philippines Group. It was followed by a series of meetings on October 23, 2021,  November 3 and 6, 2021 and December 28, 2021 to discuss the establishment the IEEE CSS Philippines Chapter.

The brainstorming of the eight volunteers and founding members led to the formulation of the Free Knowledge Transfer about Artificial Intelligence in Control Systems, which aims to conduct several webinars related to research in control systems and artificial intelligence.

On December 4, 2021, a kick-in activity of Free Knowledge Transfer about Artificial Intelligence in Control Systems was led by Dr. Rhowel M. Dellosa who outlined the organization’s objectives, goals, timelines, and plans. Engr. Christian P. Enoval, Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Philippines, delivered a motivational speech. Dr. Alvin Alon introduced the IEEE CSS Philippines volunteers and members. Dr. Sammy Militante provided information on how to join IEEE and CSS, while Dr. Jonathan V. Taylar provided the activity’s synthesis and key takeaways. The event was hosted by Engr. Roman Richard and Engr. Maria Cecilia Venal.

Several activities anchored the journey toward the formation of the IEEE CSS Philippines Chapter. Asst. Prof. Donna Mae Santos, an invited resource person presented an engaging webinar on statistics in machine learning on December 4, 2021. It was followed by a two-session webinar on Rapid Miner by Dr. Marlon Hernandez on January 8 and 15, 2022. Dr. Rhowel Dellosa discussed the WEKA and its applications to machine learning on January 22 and 29, 2022. Asst. Prof. Aimee Acoba taught Python programming in preparation for machine learning applications on February 5 and 12, 2022. Dr. Cherry Casuat discussed data visualization using Tableau and Python on February 25 and 26, 2022. Dr. Sammy Militante was the resource speaker for the March 12, 19, and 26, 2022 webinars about modern neural networks and their application to computer vision. Dr. Alvin Alon shared his knowledge about computer vision object segmentation knowledge using the fundamentals of deep learning and transfer learning on April 30, 2021, May 7, 14, and 21, 2022, and Engr. Jonel Macalisang discussed Patent Draft and Patent Search on June 18 and 25, 2022. All of the activities were participated by IEEE CSS members and research enthusiasts.
