All members and guests of the IEEE Central Section, IET Wellington Network, and ENZ Wellington Branch are welcomed to a special event, hosted by all three institutions, on the morning of 1 September 2022, in Central Wellington. The guest speaker for this event is Sir Neville Jordan, a highly regarded New Zealand engineer, entrepreneur, investor, advisor, and philanthropist. Sir Neville will enlighten us with some perspectives on his life journey across these domains. Tickets: $15 for members of any of the hosting organisations, $30 otherwise. Please register at the ENZ website here. Abstract Our lives and careers ebb and flow – positive things happen and so do the negative. As fresh graduates, we start on square one and we think we can pilot ourselves to the magic 100 but unfortunately many things get in the way. This is a perspective from an engineer who went from baking to nuclear engineering and electronics and got into drugs along the way. Introducing Our Speaker Sir Neville Jordan KNZM CNZM, is a graduate engineer and has an honorary Doctorate from Canterbury University. He is a Distinguished Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and was awarded the UK IET Kirby Medal for outstanding eminence and distinction in advanced technology”. Neville has served on numerous and varied Ministerial Advisory committees and Boards for the Australian and NZ governments. He co-founded over 30 science/tech startup companies including his microwave telecommunications company which achieved a successful IPO on the NASDAQ Main Board. He has received the Governor General's Supreme award for Exporting and was inducted into both the NZ Hi-Tech Hall of Fame and the Business Hall of Fame. He is the Past President, Royal Society of NZ, and Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington. He was Knighted in 2015 for “Services to business, science and the community”. Please see our Events Page for information regarding future events affiliated with the IEEE New Zealand Central Section.

The Electrical Engineering Group and Mechanical Engineering Group have partnered with AUT School for Future Environments to host their first conference, being held at AUT Conference Centre, Auckland on 15th September 2022. They have extended their call for abstract to diversify the conference programme, as there is much to be gained from sharing matters of professional practice. You’re invited to submit an abstract to share your research, discoveries, knowledge and experience. There are a variety of formats and your presentation can be put forward for any of the following: • 30 minute presentation • quickfire sessions • or involvement in a panel discussion Closing date for abstracts will be Monday, 30th May 2022, and we encourage you to get in early. You can submit your abstract here. This conference provides an opportunity for members and industry networks to showcase Innovation, future-focused thinking, technical challenges, design best practice or showcase interesting projects within our field. We hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards, The Conference Organising Committee Please see our Events Page for information regarding future events affiliated with the IEEE New Zealand Central Section.
Held at Victoria University of Wellington's Kelburn Campus, Prof. Carlos A. Coello Coello will give a presentation discussing the Lessons Learned after 25 Years Designing Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms. Please join us from 4-5:30pm on September 23 in CO350 (Cotton Building, third floor)! Alternatively, you are welcome to join via Zoom. Abstract: In this talk, I will describe my origins as a researcher working in a field which is now known as "evolutionary multi-objective optimization" (EMOO), 25 years ago. Then, I'll describe the inception of my research group at Cinvestav (in Mexico City, Mexico) in 2001, including some of the issues (good and bad) that researchers had to face at that time in Mexico. I will also mention some of the main differences between the way in which research on EMOO was conducted 25 years ago with respect to current research practices including, among other things, topics and methodological issues. In the last part of the talk, I'll briefly mention some of the pioneering contributions developed by my research group, but not without mentioning some of our biggest failures, too. The discussion will include some of the research topics in which I am currently interested. I'll finalize the talk with my personal (and a bit critical) view of the way in which research on EMOO is being conducted today, including some advice for young researchers working in this exciting field. Biography: Carlos A. Coello Coello (Fellow, IEEE) received his PhD in computer science from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, USA, in 1996. He is currently a Professor with Distinction (CINVESTAV-3F Researcher), Computer Science Department, CINVESTAV-IPN, Mexico City, Mexico. He has authored and co-authored over 450 technical papers and book chapters. He has also co-authored the book Evolutionary Algorithms for Solving Multiobjective Problems (2nd ed., Springer, 2007). His publications currently report over 63,197 citations in Google Scholar (his H-index is 96). His major research interests are evolutionary multiobjective optimization and constraint-handling techniques for evolutionary algorithms. Prof. Coello Coello received the 2007 National Research Award from the Mexican Academy of Sciences in the area of Exact Sciences, the Medal to the Scientific Merit 2009, granted by Mexico City’s congress, and the National Medal of Science and Arts in the area of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. He is currently an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation and serves on the editorial board of several other international journals. He is a member of ACM, Sigma Xi, and the Mexican Academy of Science. Carlos' profile is available here.
The IEEE South Australia Section will host the Australian and New Zealand Student and Young Professional Conference (ANZSCON) at the University of Adelaide, Australia. This unique event brings together the leadership from two Regional Councils and 10 IEEE sections across Australia and New Zealand. ANZSCON is an event where engineering students and young professionals can meet and network with local industry and academic leaders. The event runs for two days over a weekend and covers a wide range of activities from technical talks, workshops and networking opportunities.
