On Thursday, 11 June 2026, the IEEE Young Professionals Affinity Group (NZ Central Section) successfully hosted its highly anticipated seminar, “Breaking into Industry: Career Pathways in Data Science & AI,” at Victoria University of Wellington (Kelburn Campus, TTR 205).

Organised by Annie, the Area Chair of the IEEE YP Affinity Group, the event attracted a fantastic turnout of VUW researchers and students eager to explore professional pathways beyond academia.

Key Highlights:

  • Industry Insights: Guest speakers from the Data Science and AI sectors shared first-hand experiences regarding daily operations, organisational cultures, and what industry leaders look for in postgraduate researchers.

  • Practical Career Advice: Attendees gained actionable tips on bridging the gap between scientific research and industry expectations.

  • Networking Session: The seminar concluded with a vibrant networking session over food, allowing students to connect directly with the speakers and fellow peers in a relaxed setting.
