Last week, the IEEE NZCS hosted the 2022 Postgraduate Symposium on Victoria University of Wellington’s Kelburn Campus. A crowd of 42, including the judging panel, watched 27 presentations over three sessions. Students presented their work on projects such as that of Philippa-Kate Andrew on Laser-actuated Micromachines, Kaan Demir on Multi-label Feature Selection, and Nora (Meng) Xu on Genetic Programming for Dynamic, Flexible Job Shop Scheduling. The Section offers this event annually as an opportunity for students to practice communicating their research in preparation for conferences and events with industry.

The winner of the 2022 Symposium was Jordan MacLachlan for his presentation on Genetic Programming for Emergency Medical Dispatch. Christian Raymond and Muhammad Rehan were runners-up for their respective presentations on Learning Model Agnostic Loss Functions via Meta-Learning and the development of a novel Gut Robot.

Thank you to our Judges, Dr Murray Milner, Prof. Donald Bailey, and Dr Qi Chen; our session chairs, Dr Fanglue Zhang, Dr Bach Nguyen, and Dr Yi Mei; and to the leaders of the Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University Student Branches for organising this event, in particular Kun Huang.
