About the Society
The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is an IEEE society with technical activities concentrated around three pillars: Wireless Communications, Automotive Electronics and Motor Vehicles, and Land Transportation. VTS was first established in 1949 as the Professional Group on Vehicular Communications (PGVC) of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). When the IRE and AIEE merged in 1963 to become the IEEE, the PGVC then became the Vehicular Technology Society (VTS).
The fields of interest of the society are the theoretical, experimental and operational aspects of electrical and electronics engineering in mobile radio, motor vehicles and land transportation.
- Mobile radio shall include all terrestrial mobile services.
- Motor vehicles shall include the components and systems and motive power for propulsion and auxiliary functions.
- Land transportation shall include the components and systems used in both automated and non-automated facets of
ground transport technology.
The Chapter will organize technical activities, possibly in collaboration with other IEEE chapters and organizations, in the form of workshops, seminars, distinguished lecturer tours, and demonstrations. These interactive events will facilitate connection and collaboration among VTS members and beyond.
A Message from the Chair

Dr. Brindha Saminathan
As the Founding Chair of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) – R10 Madras Section, I am imbued with a profound sense of honor and an unyielding commitment to the responsibility you have entrusted in me. Our society isn’t just a platform. It is the pulse of the global vehicular technology community, a nexus where innovation in mobility, connectivity, and transport transforms into the tangible force that drives humanity forward.
At the heart of IEEE VTS, we navigate the vast expanse of vehicular technology, focusing not only on traditional realms such as mobile radio, motor vehicles, and land transportation systems but also pioneering the frontiers of fifth generation (5G) and beyond wireless communication systems, autonomous and connected vehicles, electrification of transport, and intelligent infrastructures. Our society is a lighthouse guiding professionals through the complexities of these domains, offering life-long learning opportunities, setting revered standards, incubating cutting-edge technologies, and fostering a globally connected network of experts.
As we steer into the future, my vision is anchored in consolidating and building upon this legacy of excellence. My mission is to ensure that IEEE VTS doesn’t just stay relevant but leads with authority, that we’re not just reacting to change but driving it. To achieve this, our strategy will revolve around several pivotal focuses:
- Member Engagement Revolution: Crafting innovative strategies to immerse our members in technical activities, ensuring that these initiatives resonate with your interests and professional aspirations, thereby nurturing a vibrant, interactive community.
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI): Embedding EDI into the DNA of our society, ensuring that our volunteer positions and leadership opportunities reflect the rich tapestry of backgrounds, perspectives, and ideas in our community.
- Fostering Innovation: Expanding our technical committees to encompass emerging technology areas, creating a fertile ground for ideas that will define the next generation of vehicular technology.
- Industry Collaboration: Bridging the gap between academia and industry, particularly encouraging our industrial members to play a pivotal role in standards development, thereby ensuring that our initiatives are both theoretically sound and practically applicable.
- Mentorship and Education: Investing in the future by guiding young professionals through mentorship programs and enhancing educational resources like the VTS Resource Center, equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills to excel.
This vision is ambitious, but with the collective expertise, passion, and commitment of our community, I am confident it is within our reach. My pledge is to serve with an ear tuned to your needs, a mindset open to innovation, and a dedication to realizing our shared goals.
The road ahead is promising, and the opportunities are limitless. Let’s embark on this journey together, driving the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society to new heights of success, innovation, and global impact.
Yours in service,
Dr. Brindha Saminathan
