Abstract

The IEEE New Initiative Committee (NIC) has been established since 2001 and it reports to the IEEE Board of
Directors (BOD). The context of the program is doing new things and encouraging IEEE innovation in the forms of
program, service, or product that will provide significant benefit and lasting impact to the IEEE and its members, the public, or the technical community. Funding of the programs are in two forms – single year seed grants under US$40K each, or multi-year new initiative programs which may be up to US$1M or above. The IEEE Digital Reality Initiative was recommended by NIC to the IEEE for support from 2020-2022 which serves to explore and enable the coming Digital Transformation through collaboration among technologists, engineers, regulators, and ethicists around the world. Technologies involved in the initiative are augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), Digital Twins, sensors, actuators, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML). In this talk, Professor Fung will share his experience in the operation of NIC for anyone who may be interested in the funding opportunity. He will also introduce Digital Reality Initiative with its relevant resources which could be useful to students, researchers, and practitioners in this discipline.
