Smart Homes for Healthcare: Bringing Care to Your Doorstep

Abstract: The world is experiencing a rapid demographic shift toward population aging, driven by a significant rise in life expectancy. Aging is often accompanied by multiple health conditions,including chronic diseases and physical disabilities that require long-term monitoring and management. However, the current healthcare model, which remains largely reactive, relies on episodic clinical assessments and interventions after the onset of symptoms or adverse health events, frequently failing to detect the early signs of physiological, behavioral, and functional declines that may precede disease onset. Therefore, there is a growing need for continuous, personalized, and proactive approaches to healthcare delivery. Advances in flexible materials, wearable sensors, computation and communication technologies, and artificial intelligence are paving the way for the transformation of ordinary homes into intelligent healthcare environments, i.e., smart homes. These technologies can continuously monitor physiological signs, biochemical markers, human gait, and daily activities, enabling early detection of health deterioration, remote monitoring, and personalized interventions while allowing individuals to maintain their independence and quality of life. This seminar will explore how smart homes can potentially drive a paradigm shift in healthcare from reactive care to proactive and preventive care through innovations in wearable sensors, computing and communication technologies, and artificial intelligence. Biography: Dr. Sumit Majumder, SMIEEE, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Bangladesh. He received his Ph.D. and M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from McMaster University, Canada, and his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh. He is a recipient of the prestigious Mitacs Postdoctoral Fellowship in Canada.
Dr. Majumder has professional experience spanning academia and industry in both Bangladesh and Canada. He has authored peer-reviewed publications that have received more than 4,600 citations and has secured competitive research funding. He previously served as an Invited Research Fellow at INTI International University, Malaysia, and serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for several international journals in biomedical engineering, sensors, and healthcare technologies. His research focuses on wearable sensors, biomedical electronics, medical AI, assistive technologies, and smart textiles for personalized and home-based healthcare applications.
