IEEE ACT Section, Women in Engineering (WIE) Seminar

July 6, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Title: Snails, Slime and Serendipity

Speaker: Dr Merryn McKinnon, Lecturer/Communication & Engagement Research Fellow, Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, ANU

Abstract: How does a marine scientist ends up in Canberra? Despite her best plans, Merryn’s career has been anything but planned. And she would not change a thing.  Come and hear how science, and serendipity, can take your career to places you never imagined.

Biography: Merryn started out as a marine scientist, but she soon realised that talking to people about her science could do a lot more.  She moved to science communication and has stayed there ever since in a variety of roles and countries. Merryn has slimed presidents, made children laugh and created programs and events to change ideas, inspire interest in science and to help protect the environment.  She is now a lecturer and researcher in science communication, helping the scientists, public health workers and policy makers of tomorrow to communicate clearly and with influence.

At the end of the meeting, there will be ample opportunity for networking through an informal gathering with light refreshment and snacks.

In conjunction with catering RSVP is required, please email [email protected] by Monday 3 July 2017, 5:00 pm

All welcome
